“Even in such technical lines as engineering, about 15% of one’s financial success is due to one’s technical knowledge and about 85% is due to human skills, to personality and the ability to lead people.”— Dale Carnegie
What issues in the world do you care about the most? When you look around you, what do you feel strongest about improving? What is it that you feel passionately about that you can talk about for hours. My number one objective that I feel most driven by is around the area of education. Helping people grow. Creating nurturing environments and spaces that allow them to blossom and develop.
My schooling was tainted by many things. There was so much other stuff going on in my life that I found it very difficult to fit in. Studying was really challenging and I felt disconnected from a lot of the processes of education. So much of it was about regurgitation. How well you performed as a photocopier, IMHO. I had been taught from an early age to question things. To use my critical thinking and analyse scenarios. From the age of 8 I always achieved marks as a very average student. Comments in my weekly/monthly reports said things like: Sam has to pull his socks up; Sam is a dreamer; Sam seems very distracted; Sam is a lovely kid although struggles academically.
When I went to college, a technical type education system, I immediately excelled and was in the top of my class. I realised that I wasn’t stupid and became aware of how important a good education system is. I began teaching at the age of 21 and since then have always loved working in this field as I see the benefit it makes to others. The change it makes in the world. Discovering what world issue is most important to you is an essential ingredient in finding a life purpose that is balanced with your values and desires. This topic, of the world needs, is covered in the ‘Pathways to Purpose’ programme, giving you essential tools in helping you design a roadmap for finding your purpose.
