“We think, mistakenly, that success is the result of the amount of time we put in at work, instead of the quality of time we put in.”
— Arianna Huffington, author and businesswoman
What does work-life balance mean to you? Balance is one of my top priorities in life. In any area. I am very aware of neglecting one area over another when it’s happening. When I am spending too much time inside, I try to go for a walk. When I don’t travel for some time, I know it’s time to pack my stuff and have a few-day getaway. When I don’t see my friends for a while, I arrange to catch up with them. Am I too anxious and overthinking? I listen to uplifting music or meditate.
The same applies to work-life balance. If I equally prioritise my work and my personal life, I feel more content. I had a period in my life when I worked 10 hours a day, sometimes 6 or 7 days per week and I couldn’t properly focus on what I was doing. Also, when I got home after work, I had dinner and ran to the gym. Exhausted. And my next day was the same. I felt so empty. I did it only to make my boss happy and earn a little more money.
Studies have shown that in many cases, better work-life balance increases the productivity of people at work. It’s not about how much time we spend at work, but the quality of the work done. And more time doesn’t equal better quality. Researchers also found that productivity doesn’t decrease with fewer hours in work. Quite the opposite – in some cases it increased! Our attention is limited and when it’s stretched over many hours, we are less productive. Also, when we’re happy with our private life, we bring this feeling to work. That’s why balancing our private and professional life is so important for our wellbeing and productivity. Work-life balance is one of the topics we cover in our programme ‘Pathways to Purpose’, giving you the essential tools in helping you design a roadmap for finding your purpose.
